Voxer, a cross-platform app that turns the Android into a handy dandy walkie-talkie, has a variety of mobile apps that allow for communication with other individuals. It gives you the ability to do voice chat, text chat and make audio recordings through Wi-Fi, 4G and 3G. Voxer has been a powerful addition to group chat. When we're looking to compare it to something similar, the closest comparison might be either Skype or Viber in terms of call management and voice chatting. Voxer also features a text chat option similar to WhatsApp where you have a comprehensive app.

You can log into Voxer to create your account through email or with a Facebook account. Should you decide to take the Facebook route, however, Voxer will immediately notify you of which Facebook friends have the Android, iPhone and which Facebook users use Voxer. After that, all you do is click the name of a Voxer user and talk to them. You can also send them text messages and record audio. Whenever they use Voxer at the same time as you, they will receive a notification that lets you chat back and forth. Simply hit the "Push to Talk" feature, and it works a lot like a walkie-talkie. Did your friend go offline? If so, no problem. You record your audio message, and they will receive it after they have logged in. Along with one-on-one chats, you can also take advantage of Voxer's group chat setting.

The sound quality of Voxer is adequate, but it does sound somewhat tinny at times compared to Skype. Like with Skype, however, the call quality depends on everyone's internet connection. If you want to practice before you speak to someone, you can hit the, "Team Voxer" friend button. This lets you test your audio recordings and text convos before you leap into a conversation with the actual contact. As an all-in-one text chat, Voxer does a great job, and it leaves you with excellent audio recordings. Everyone will have their own username, and like with Skype, you will have to tell your friends your username before they can add you. Should you decide to upgrade to Voxer Pro, you can visit a profile and pick a username.

Voxer Pro lets you listen and respond to messages right from notifications. You can also take on group chats, and with Voxer Pro, these group chats can reach up to 500 people. You can share messages and learn through email or SMS. Voxer also supports offline messaging, and you have an app very similar to Skype. If you're searching for a great alternative to Skype, then Voxer might be the choice for you. It combines text, video and pictures into a single app.

  • Group chat of up to 500 people
  • Voice chat through text, voice and audio
  • Intimate one-on-one chats
  • Connect through Facebook

  • Sound quality can be tinny at times
  • Fewer users than Skype—hard to find others who use Voxer
